Abbey Team Deserve Real Credit for Having the Vision to Modernise Their Building ; Letters

Summary

I wish to say that modernising Bath Abbey is NOT vandalism In recent years, many churches and cathedrals have replaced pews with chairs. The latter are much more comfortable, provide much more versatile seating and have usually been a great success. The pews that are removed are rarely 'original' to the building and are often of Victorian or Edwardian vintage.

I am therefore pleased to see that the abbey is considering the removal of pews. This will facilitate the use of the abbey as a concert venue as well as a place of worship. Therefore, in that we should be doing all we can to reach out into the community and that buildings should not just be used on Sundays. If churches do not change, they are accused of being stuck in the past, but when they do try to change they may be accused of "betraying their heritage" or of "vandalism".
