The criticisms levelled by design writer Stephen Bayley at the city of Bath in yesterday's Observer newspaper will doubtless cause a sharp intake of breath.

Bathonians stand accused of philistinism and nimbyism. Council officers, alleges Mr Bayley, are "conniving, spineless time- wasters." Correspondence in The Bath Chronicle's letters pages, he claims, is "rancid and negative".
