In its 22 years of existence running through to 1996, the county of Avon was a much-maligned creation.
The disparate range of towns and villages it brought together were never easy bedfellows - Bath and Bristol being the prime examples - while the uprooting of many a settlement from its centuries old county base - such as Bath being removed from Somerset - proved deeply unpopular.
