Next week English Touring Opera gives rare performances of an historic comic opera at the Theatre Royal which has its roots in an 18th century real-life Bath story of romance and intrigue. Christopher Hansford reports Imagine the newly-built Royal Crescent on a dark evening back in March 1772. Out of the front door of number 11 comes a beautiful young girl. Further along the street awaits a carriage into which the girl famous for her beautiful singing voice is helped.

The young girl has had already had several offers of marriage, one in particular from a man pursuing her in earnest and it is partly to escape his unwanted attentions that she is leaving Royal Crescent under the shadows of darkness.
