The Chantry Singers St. Michael's Church, Bath
A church which combines a sense of intimacy with a feeling of space, a clear sure acoustic, music which integrated the rhythmic energy of Spanish America with the calm tranquillity of Morten Lauridsen, and a choir on song from the opening phrase. All that was missing was a decent audience, because of a multiple series of clashes. What happened to the anti-clash diary? But I can only report on what I heard: and it was very good indeed, using Padilla's 17th century setting of the Mass as a framework for the three modern American composers: Morten Lauridsen, Randall Thompson and Eric Whitacre. Lauridsen's beautiful Magnum Mysterium has become very popular and we also heard his Ubi Caritas with its tenor plainsong opening.See the full content of this document
