Summary
I write in reference to last week's story about the Coalition Government granting B&NES Pounds 11 million towards the BTP package. The proposal, which originally contained the BRT was flawed right at the start, but the Tory administration stubbornly attempted to push it through regardless. I am pleased that later the Liberal Democrats did go on to scrap the BRT, but have to say I find it somewhat ironic that they claimed so much credit for ridding us of this controversial element, which in truth was originally their idea anyway.
But not only did the Lib Dems manage to gain thanks and respect for scrapping their own plan, but they also convinced people they would go on to be the council that listened and consulted. How is it then that since they have been in control, despite numerous requests about the siting of the Newbridge Park and Ride residents have still not been given a straight answer? Since the BRT was scrapped the Liberal Democrats presented the Government with a slightly less controversial, but second-rate and over-priced proposal. Now we are in the position where the Coalition is squandering multi millions of public money on a half-baked scheme whilst cutting funds to other sectors.See the full content of this document
